Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the wonderful village of Needham in Norfolk. The cache only contains a logbook so please take a pencil with you. There is a small gift for the 'first to find'. Please replace the cache exactly as it was found. Happy hunting!

Needham is situated on the north bank of the River Waveney and has a population of only 310 in 129 households (according to the 2001 census). People have been living in this area for tens of thousands of years, and the gravel pits in the village (near to the roundabout) have shown evidence of Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman remains. The name ‘Needham’ means “needy, poor homestead or village”.

The mainly medieval Church of St. Peter stands in the centre of the village and is one of 124 existing round tower churches in Norfolk. The cache is situated at the village hall, and this was built as a Victorian village school in 1873 for over £550. In 1883 about thirty children attended, and the school was enlarged in 1900 to provide for 120 children. By the end of the summer term in 1958 only seventeen children were attending the school when it closed. Surplus contributions from the Coronation celebrations in 1953 formed the beginning of a village hall fund, and the building was bought in 1960 for £320. The school was officially opened as a village hall in 1961.

Needham once supported three pubs and now there is only one. When long-time resident Mr Derek Buttle moved to the village nearly fifty years ago it had two shops (one with a post office), a garage that sold petrol and cars, a pottery, a small holding selling its produce and a vicar living in the rectory. Past cottage industries included glove and lace making. There was also a working mill.

Needham was diverse with occupations and its population included many war veterans. An air commodore who led a war time raid on the V2 site at Peenemunde, hindering the Germans war effort by bombing and causing the death of a top German scientist. A second slightly inoffensive chap who was mentioned twice in dispatches on D Day tending the badly wounded on the beach when he heard a ping and found a bullet had gone through his helmet. Another country gentleman recruited in the most secret of armies, trained to resist and sabotage behind enemy lines if Germany had invaded England. His life expectancy was measured in days.

A professional cyclist, a top model, a TV producer, an army boxing champion, poetesses, an author, the youngest Captain in the British Army and a world war officer who fought in the trenches have all lived in Needham.
