The road to D'Estrees Bay is unsealed and a little rough in parts, but fine for a conventional vehicle. The walk to the cache is an 800m loop.
Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park and Wilderness Protection Area covers the wild windswept Cape Gantheaume Peninsula on the southernmost point of Kangaroo Island, from D’Estrees Bay to Seal Bay Conservation Park, and inland to Murray Lagoon. This cache will take you to the D'Estrees Bay section of the park. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore the area fully. There are several marked spots of interest along the road which are all worth looking at.
In the 1840s one of Kangaroo Island’s three whaling stations operated from D’Estrees Bay as the sheltered inlet was a perfect calving area for southern right whales in winter.
Park at the car parking co-ordinates, and take the walk to Tadpole Cove. Just a short distance from the carpark there is a track veering off to the right - make a small detour here and view the old Threshing Floor - used by early settlers to process locally grown grain. It is hard to imagine crops growing around here!
Please take care on KI roads, most are unsealed and be especially careful at dusk/dawn/nighttime as the wildlife is abundant and often on the roads. Also be aware that there are tiger snakes on the island, no need to be alarmed but please be sensible.
