The original cache at this site (Dartington Gardens - owned by Moor to Sea) has been archived and so we thought it a good opportunity to include it as an ‘extra’ to link up with the Dartington Estate Trail/Link.
The Dartington Gardens and Hall are well worth a visit whilst you are in the area as the back entrance to the gardens is just up the road on the right from this cache. You can re-join the trail as No.15 which is past the Main Entrance and so gives the opportunity to stroll through the grounds at your leisure. (Entry is free but there is a donation box to help maintain the gardens). (NB: NO DOGS ALLOWED IN THE GARDENS). The site on which the Hall stands has been occupied for well over a thousand years and originally was a run down medieval mansion that was built for John Holand, Earl of Huntingdon, half brother to King Richard 11. A well known Devon family, the Chapernownes, purchased the estate in 1559 and remained there for over three hundred years. Their fortunes dwindled due to the agricultural depression in the 19th century which robbed them of their livelihood and they were forced to sell much of their land. In 1925 the remaining 800 acre estate was bought by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst and became the basis of their joint venture in rural regeneration. It was very badly run down and much of the Hall was in ruins. Fortunately Dorothy had inherited considerable wealth, which she devoted to founding the Dartington Hall Trust. The Elmhurst’s spent much time and money restoring the estate and building new properties on it. Within the grounds of Dartington Hall there is the Cafe and also a Bar/Restaurant where you can enjoy a drink/snack in wonderful surroundings. Parking: As from the 1st May 2019. there are new parking charges at Dartington Hall as follows: 1 hour £1 (free at The Shops at Dartington) 2 hours - £2, 3 hours - £2.50, 4 hours - £3.50, £6 - All day. £1 after 6 pm until 10 am. Public toilets are available. Cache placed with permission from the Land Use Manager of the Dartington Trust.
