Geocache Description:

BALMORAL CASTLES!

Cache is not at posted coordinates.
Instead, this is a short and very quick offset cache.

This area of West Broadway contains some extravagant old manors. Most of the rich and high society-types of Winnipeg lived in this neighbourhood at the turn of the 20th century. This was a period of Winnipeg's history when the city was thriving and growing into the largest city in western Canada. Therefore, the prominent members of the community built their mansions to reflect that optimism and prosperity.

The Robson Residence and the neighbouring Van Vliet Residence on Balmoral Street highlight two types of architecture designs common in the West Broadway area.
The Robson Residence (82 Balmoral) is a Queen Anne style home first inhabited by Judge Hubert A. Robson. The Van Vliet Residence (86 Balmoral) is Queen Anne/Tudor Revival style design. Thomas A. Van Vliet was the president of the Winnipeg Saddlery Co. Ltd.

Other interesting architectural examples worth noting nearby are:
114 Balmoral - Neo-Georgian style, built for Reverend Clarence MacKinnon, pastor of the Westminister Presbyterian Church on Notre Dame Avenue.
104 and 106 Balmoral - (Chevrier Residences) are both examples of the Modern (Chicago School) architectural styles. Eudore Chevrier lived at 104 Balmoral next door to his parents at 106 Balmoral. Hon. N.E. Chevrier was a Canadian senator and founder of Chevrier and Son, Clothing and Fur Retailers.
98 Balmoral (Bathgate House) is an example of a house that leans toward the Queen Anne style but it's low pitched roof and other features suggests the Modern / Prairie School style. Mrs. Margaret Armstrong Bathgate (widow) was married to William Bathgate, a prominent politician and first managing director of the Winnipeg Electric & Gas Light Co.
56 Balmoral (Henry E Sharpe House) is an eclectic, utilitarian cottage-style home that defies classification. Mr. Sharpe was the western manager of the Imperial Oil Company, the director of the Y.M.C.A, and president of the Western Canada Baptist convention.
51 Balmoral (William Milner House) is a Dutch Colonial design. Mr. Milner was the director of the Maple Leaf Company and member of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange.
42 Balmoral (Jabez Miller House) is predominately Neo-Georgian with many features referencing the Chicago School of modern architecture. Mr. Miller was the secretary-treasurer of D.R. Dingwall Limited.
