Geocache Description:

Most of us know the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program during the depression.  The CCC was designed to provide employment for young men who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression while at the same time implementing a general natural resource conservation program in every state and territory.  Maximum enrollment at any one time was 300,000; in nine years 2.5 million young men participated.  The CCC operated from 1933 to 1942.

The above coordinates will bring you to the site of a modest memorial to five Civilian Conservation Corps recruits killed in a truck accident on the way to church in December of 1934. Easy to overlook, set back from the road as it is, the monument consists of a circle of stones around a flagpole. The centerpiece is a marble boulder carved with the names of the members of the 196th CCC company killed when the dump truck they were riding in skidded on the icy road and slammed into a concrete barrier near the Butternut Basin ski area in Great Barrington.

It was Sunday, Dec. 16, and they were on their way to the 8 a.m. Mass at St. Peter's Church. The priest rushed to the scene and administered the last rites to the dead and dying. Four of the five, all in their teens, were from the Boston area; 19-year-old Benoit Helie was from Holyoke. They were a month away from ending their training after working on forest projects for $30 a month, $25 of which was mailed to their needy families.

Each Memorial Day a wreath is placed in memory of the boys "Who Died In The Line Of Duty" as the monument is inscribed

Park at the gate for a short walk to the memorial.
