The heart of Boerne, historic Main Plaza, is the central public space that brings our community together.
Main Plaza was established in 1852 and was much larger than the remaining parcel seen today. It was used as a place to water horses and livestock when residents came to town. Now concerts, festivals, market days, weddings, and other events are held on Main Plaza.
The Boerne Village Band conducts Abendkonzertes beginning in June. The Boerne Village Band is the oldest continuously organized German band in the world outside Germany. Abendkonzertes are fun and free – just bring a lawn chair and a German soda water to enjoy with your German taco.
Cache is easy to find by taking a rock hard seat and a short reach.
Across the street you will find the Dienger Building (former Boerne Public Library). The historic building began life in 1884 as a general store and is reportedly haunted by Joseph Dienger. Some say they feel his presence as they enter. He turns the lights on and off late at night and is said to have piled books in the middle of the floor due to his disapproval of alcohol being served at the library opening party. An historic marker is located on the east side of the building. "The Dienger - A Cultural & Heritage Center" group was formed by local residents to preserve the building as a community center. diengercenter.org/
A benchmark is easily found on the sidewalk in front of Main Plaza.
The Kendall County Courthouse complex, a short walk from here, contains interesting buildings and four historical markers . You may also score two other benchmarks near the old courthouse – an NGS to log and a USACE for fun.
Boerne history:
The city of Boerne had its start in Western Europe as the Industrial Revolution of the 1770s began to bring social and economic changes to the lives of ordinary people. Germany was plagued by poverty and overpopulation. Little hope existed for employment or advancement. Educated professionals were usually paid by barter. A great unrest rippled through the common young men and second sons of nobility. One of the most vociferous advocates of reform was a brilliant young Jew named Lob Buruch. His lucid and incisive writings bitterly attacked German despotism and upheld the rights of the individual. He changed his name to Ludwig Borne, a practice of many of his descent, in order to improve his social standing. Ludwig Boerne became one of the initiators and leaders of the revolutionary Young Germany movement in German literature.
This is the revived final of the late puzzle, "Ludwig, the Rebel".
