A journey into the woods of High Dam - in the dark ! This cache can only be found in the DARK OF THE NIGHT! The darker the better!
This is a night-only cache, virtually impossible during the day. The cache is available 24/7 all year.
When you go to hunt this cache, a bright torch is recommended. Hold it at eye level (a bright head torch would be good) to get the best possible reflection from the trail markers (see photos).
This is the fourth 'only in the dark' cache in the locality. The other two at High Dam are shorter and a little easier than this one. A third is located in Simpson Ground near Stavely.
The above location is that of the trail head - where a good footpath leaves the roadside. Parking is available a short distance away at either of the two identified locations. The layby is the most convenient.
Take care on the road and enter the woods. Take a few paces up the slope and get your torches sorted out - you will soon be able to see your first clue then you are off on your own ....
With your torch at eye level carefully shine your torch all around onto the tree trunks about head height until you see the bright reflectors indicating your path. If you hold your light at your side, the fireflies may appear dim or even be invisible.
Keep following the trail of reflectors until you come a 'Tree' - you will know when you have reached it!. The cache is at its base behind a few rocks.
Once found, carry on for a few meters and keep following the track to your right, you will soon find your way back to the start.
For those who will try this type of cache in the daytime, you might be successful (with perseverence) , however, you WILL miss out on the intended experience and the adventure of a short walk into the woods in the dark.
Try the 'real' experience. A day time activity does not really justify a claim but if all you want is another smiley face then so be it. It really isn't that scary....
