Geocache Description:

"Somoskô is not a big castle, nor it lies on a big place, but I stared at its built, which is made of beautiful pentagular, hexagonal stones." - Sándor Petôfi (a great Hungarian poet)

The castle of Somoskô was built by the Illés line of Kacsics genus, in the 13th century after the havoc of Tartars at the great castle building movement.

The castle is on a volcanic cone. We can find the famous basaltflow on the north side. The view is fascinating, it's rightly famous around Europe. The lava, breaking through sandstone, pressed into loose tufa, where it cooled fast creating wonderful pillared structure. The loose cover slowly errupted and the volcanic cone appeared which became a good strategic position and gave good building material for the castle.

On road #21 - after Salgótarjan - turn to Salgóbánya, then to left to Somoskô. We can drive to the parking lot beside the castle. The castle is in Slovakia, in 15 meters distance from the wire fence which is the border. First we can visit the Petôfi memorial then we can go to Slovakia to discover this picturesque castle, lately we can go to the basaltflow.

The border is open in this point since 29 august 2001, so you can go through the gate of the wire fence, I mean the national border.

The geocache which is a 20 x 20 x 7,5 cm plastic box is on the north side of the castle, beyond the basaltflow, hidden under the protecting boughs of a big tree. These thick boughs are protecting the cache from the rolling basalt stones.

We wish you a pleasent and successful hunt! Anikó and Miki
