An elaborate night multicache. Teamwork is recommended, and special equipment is required. Total hiking distance is just under 2 km. There's no need to leave the marked trails, and no bushwacking. However, accessing Ground Zero does require some physical dexterity.
Cliff Gilker Park is located just off Hwy. 101 in Roberts Creek, approximately 15 km from the Langdale ferry terminal and right next to the Sunshine Coast Golf Course. With over 7 km of scenic, hiking only trails it is a very popular spot for families, hikers, photographers and nature lovers. In addition to the trails, there are also grass playing fields, a playground, picnic area and public washrooms.
As you will see from the trail map, the four trails are colour coded to help you find your way and are all loop trails. They also have names - Washout, Katimavik, River Run and Shortcut.
There is a very pretty waterfall along the green trail and this area is a very popular destination hike on a warm summer day. This area also has a wheelchair viewing platform and some of the trails are wheelchair accessible. Some trails also have some stair climbing and bridges over the two creeks - Clack and Roberts Creek.
For this adventure you'll need a partner or a team, a really good flashlight, your reading glasses, an accurate compass, note pad, trail map and a sense of adventure. If you shine your light into the bush, you'll see a bright pinpoint of light. This is a firetack*, a reflector that's invisible by day but visible for several hundred feet at night. Follow the firetacks... one tack means follow the trail and look for the next one, and two tacks means to look for special instructions in the form of concealed written instructions very close by.
Don't wander too close to the banks of the creek in the dark as there are some slippery dropoffs. Pay very close attention to signposts with "You are here" maps at the trail intersections and you should find all your hidden clues. With a good compass, you shouldn't get lost.
From PARKING, go to the published cache coordinates and Use Clue #1, which gives you the address of The House on the Cliff. Follow the trail of single firetacks until you get to a double firetack (waypoint). This is where your next direction clue is hidden. Continue following the single firetack trail to waypoints and pick up direction clues, and you will eventually come to a waypoint with the coordinates of the final cache location.**
After finding the final cache (which you put back very carefully) just continue following the firetacks out of the park. GOOD LUCK!
*Just a few words about firetacks... they best show up when you hold your flashlight at head height. The 'stealth' coloured firetacks may not show themselves even if they're right in front of you if your flashlight is down by your side.
Firetacks can also be very difficult to see in the rain, as the light reflecting off the raindrops looks like thousands of firetacks. Choose dry weather.
**If the tree cover makes it difficult to enter accurate coordinates, use the direction clue provided with the coordinates. Then follow the firetacks using your GEOSENSE and Clue #2 (which is backwards)
