Re: GC35QEZ by Olewaif...
DEFINITION " Pandemic : an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population "
( merriam-webster dic.)
Firefly Effect: Like Lou Gehrigs disease, this is a previously-existing condition that is named after a particularly severe or well-known 'sufferer'.
F.E. is characterized, as many know, by the ineffable and well-nigh irresistible urge to place new geocaches a little farthur along trails, paths, roads etc. where the F.E. victim is seeking existing caches. It's a sad sight to see a person in the throes of this condition... hands shaking ..drooling... glassy eyed .. fumbling for just one MORE cache to place about 200 meters from last cache. They mouth such phrases as " I'll shoot the coords ! "... " where's that nano " and " There's room for one more here. " Quite pitiful really. The condition is virtually untreatable and incurable. The only resort is to let the disease runs its sordid course (sort of like having an animal in its ' rut ') and hopefully it subsides until next time FE sufferer goes caching. Such are all addiction-like symptoms. FE annonymous chapters are reportedly in the planning stages. God bless them!
Yes indeed there seems little doubt that this condition has spread far and wide... new examples are to be seen everywhere! The good news: These poor sad addicts do contribute new caches for all the sane, more measured cachers to enjoy. This provides consolation to family and friends (but only if they cache too !). This cache is an attempt to come to a greater understanding and thus empathy with all those who have become afflicted.
As of December 2011 this condition was known in P.E.I. and N.L. However, an infected geocacher has brought this infection to Nova Scotia (oops?). Right now, no known cure has been determined; however several geocachers are working hard on a cure... to be released publicly in 2012...
