This is one in a planned series of caches featuring my local parks and, particularly, dog walking parks.
Cruickshank Park is a favourite. The West of Melbourne is a basalt plain created by volcanic activities millions of years ago. Lava that poured from these volcanoes cooled and eventually became basalt, otherwise known as bluestone.
Basalt was identified as suitable for building and paving in the 19th Century and by the early 20th Century Cruickshank Park, as we know it today, was home to a total of eleven quarries.
In 1942 a concept plan for the creation of Cruickshank Park was drawn and, over time, Cruickshank Park has been transformed from a moonscape of quarries and tips to a tree lined haven for families and their 4 legged friends.
The park has public tennis courts, fitness stations, a half basketball court, a playground and a BMX track. It is an off lead park for dogs except for between 8-10am and 3-5pm each day.
