In the late 1800’s, Vancouver City Hospital was located in downtown Vancouver, first in a tent on Powell Street and later in a wood building at Pender, Beatty and Cambie Streets.
But, as the city grew, a larger hospital was needed.
In 1902, 5 ½ acres of undeveloped land located on Fairview Ridge was purchased. The site was one block from the streetcar lines on Broadway and cost the city $5,500.00. The new hospital was to be called Vancouver General Hospital.
The architectural company, Grant & Henderson, was selected to design the hospital. George W. Grant, had already designed Carnegie Library at Main and Hastings. The building plans took into consideration modern hospital designs used in Eastern Canada and the US. The final VGH architectural drawings were presented for approval in 1904.
The new hospital was under construction for two years before the first patients were admitted in 1906, re-located from the old hospital via horse-drawn ambulance.
The original building plans were completed in 1914.
Over the next 80 years patients of all ages received care in wards A, B, C and D. But, with Vancouver growing rapidly, the hospital building and the lands around it were often in a state of renovation and growth. In fact, VGH was not housed in a single building for long. And the original 5 ½ acres purchased was soon increased to support expansion.
The original hospital building, now known as Heather Pavilion, is one of 14 buildings on VGH site. It still stands but no longer provides patient care.
Due to the proximity of other caches nearby and the fact that caches can't be placed on hospital property, this cache is NEAR to the site Heather Pavilion.
If you look, you can easily see much of it’s original architecture and beautiful granite. In the early 2000’s, VGH began to remove additions that were made to Heather Pavilion to expose it’s beauty and history. Some of the building’s original, surrounding green space is once again available for patient, staff and community enjoyment. While some of the additions to the original building remain (particularly to the east), in time they will be removed and the original building fully exposed.
Today VGH is one of Canada’s largest and well respected hospitals, holding 1,000 beds, 40+ out-patient clinics and employing about 10,000 staff. VGH offers every medical specialty except for maternity and pediatrics and houses BC's only adult Burn Unit and Spinal Cord injury unit.
Cache is a magnetic key box. Can hold small trade items. 'Gotcha' pathtag for FTF.
