Geocache Description:

Frankly, this is a rather silly cache located near a small dale, west of the village of Foolow.

Yes, you might think it's a silly little dale and therefore frankly a silly place to locate a cache. So that would make it a silly cache. And rightly so, because you would be sharing the sentiments of the generations of locals who have lived and worked the area for so long. Presumably they also thought it was a silly place for a dale, interfering perhaps with their flat farmed fields. Whatever the reason, the dale is now officially recorded as Silly Dale, and this name is quite enough to merit a cache. But will you be silly enough to venture out to find it? You might pass this way anyway, but if not why not enjoy a short walk from the village of Foolow? Park somewhere near the duck pond and take the footpath that is hidden on it's left, just right of the first driveway. Take the narrow passage and you'll come out on the fields. Walk diagonally downhill, cross an old lane, keep going. Eventually you'll come out on a little lane, near the bottom of Silly Dale. Take the lane for a short distance and turn right into another ancient lane, up the left (west) side of the dale. Don't forget the cache, and then walk up the track to the top of Silly Dale. Cross the road and walk up the very minor road into Grindlow. Once you arrive in the village, take the first track on the right, and the footpath will bring you out virtually back in Foolow, where 2 minutes of road will take you back to the start. The walk is 2 miles and will take around an hour. Check a map before going out if you are unsure of the route. Anyone visiting this cache will be bombarded by something we locals take for granted, but is one of the most popular features of this part of the Peak District. There are many small fields, different shapes and sizes and all divided by the ancient drystone walls unique in type to this area. These tiny fields and labyrinths of narrow lanes haven't been altered in many years, so please enjoy this element of the area. The cache is an easy find, hidden at the point which provides you with the best view up the dale. It does face the path so please make sure it's fully hidden before you leave. Watch out of people popping up, it can be busy here at times. Well done to cats-eyes for getting to this one first.
