Geocache Description:

To be found on a very scenic drive.
There is plenty of parking on both sides of the tunnel.
Drive with Care.
Approx. 30 klm from Mittagong.
Difficulty rating is mainly due to the winding narrow road.

The sandstone Tunnell was completed during 1899 as part of a new tourist road linking the Southern Highlands to Wombeyan Caves, in rural NSW. Officially opened on 29th January 1900. The road was originally named "Duprez" Road in honour of Adolphe Prosper Duprez of Bowral, who was the driving force behind its construction. The road and tunnel are stil in use today taking people further down into the valley and the crossing of the Wollondilly river at "Goodmans Ford" and the Wombeyan Caves.
There was a marble quarry just past the caves but it had to close in 1998. The extration of the cream and grey-white marble had been operating from the 1950's.
At the time of closure there was a stockpile of about 200blocks, weighing up to 13tonnes, await removal. It was estimated the stockpile could last five more years.
Buildings that had been finished in Wombeyan marble included Martin Place branches of the "Reserve and State Banks".
The road is very narrow and winding so please TAKE CARE and remember there could always be someone coming the other way.
The cache is a cammo fruit container with the usual swaps. Take a pen incase the one has gone missing. Just of the side of the road.
