Geocache Description:

This cache and GC3A7K3 placed as part of New Brunswick 2011-2012 Come Out and Play Contest. These two caches are unique in that they represent methods of communication from times gone by. How technology changes things. Each cache has a theme relating to communication which can be found in the hint. Please leave something that relates to the theme if you can.
In 1902 by special Act, the Union Telephone Company was incorporated with the system extending from Hawkshaw to Grand Falls. The early telephones were wooden boxes with a crank handle. All calls went through a central office, private lines were non-existent and “rubbering” or listening became quite common. This system was able to alert all the people on the line of an emergency such as a fire. One extra long ring signalled the “blue light” signal. (Blue Light signal meant emergency). In 1905 there were only 4 listing for this area, 72 listings by 1908 and by 1916 the idea caught on resulting in hiring more switchboard operators. The switch board operators were often called on to answer a wide variety of questions. What time is it? Who died? Where’s the fire? Cache owner’s grandmother was a switchboard operator until she married.
Cache is best if accessed from the old hwy (Rte 102) so you can pick up the other one in the area with a similar theme.
