Grand Old Mountain View State HS*Archive 10-3-21* Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Scout Master: The School has asked that the caching be limited to after 6pm and this is understandably limiting to the ability to geocache by those traveling, so I have decided to Archive it. Thanks to all who visited over the years.

Geocache Description:

Permission given by Ms. Gibson, Principal of Mountainview Elementary.
She said it is OK for cachers to pass the No Trespassing sign if you approach that direction.

Here stands a stone monument that I thought cachers might want to visit,
especially those from this area, as this is part of out local history.

Inscription:
MOUNTAIN VIEW SCHOOL
ORGANIZED 1911.

"Where the mountains rise in beauty"
The Grand Old Mountain View State
High School stood on this spot. From
1924 to 1954 some 2000 students
passed through her doors. This
memorial was erected in 1966 by the
Mountain View Alumni Association to
preserve the memories and heritage
of the school and its students.

I found the follwing information on the SC historical schools website:
http://sciway3.net/greenville-historical-schools/SCIwayMountainView.htm :
"In the Highland Township of Northern Greenville County, the community of Mountain View established a school district in 1911 and built a white frame elementary school building on 1 acre of property given by Mr. Peirce Jones. More land was added to the original site and in 1921 the high school was built and opened with three teachers. A second building with four classrooms and a gymnasium was later added to the high school building. In 1938 a separate auditorium with a seating capacity of 800 was built and the school consisted of a couple of two-story brick classroom buildings, one of which had a gymnasium, a bell tower, a home economics building, an auditorium, a shop, a cannery, a potato house and a teacherage.

The potato house was used to cure sweet potatoes and the cannery as well as the potato house was operated by a vocational agriculture teacher for the benefit of the community. The teacherage was a wooden frame home with a large front porch used to give the unmarried teachers a place to stay.

In 1951 all 82 local school districts within Greenville County were consolidated into the School District of Greenville County. In 1954 Mountain View and Jordan High Schools were closed and their students were assigned to the new Blue Ridge High School which in currently the building for Blue Ridge Middle School.

A new Mountain View Elementary School was built in 1957 on property adjacent to the old Mountain View School. After the old school was torn down, the cannery was sold and the potato house was moved to the back of the property." (You can still see the building) "The old school site with its stone retaining walls and circular drive was over a period of years covered with growth until 1996 when the Mountain View Landmark Foundation built a stone marker on the site of the old school."

Please take the time to stand at the monument and soak in the mountian air around you and let yourself travel back in time for a bit. Bring a lunch and take time for a pic-nic.

Happy Caching!
