One place, where interesting geologic features related to the Wilcox Group are found on public property is the sand pit at Eddie Jones Nature Park.
It is 3.5 miles south of Spring Ridge, Caddo Parish, Louisiana. At that Location, a person can observe examples of meter-scale concretions, which are found in the Wilcox Group.
What are these concretions you ask? Although cementing minerals are not pervasive in abundance, they are concentrated in concretions that resist erosion. Concretions are usually classified in two groups, 1.)Muddy textures in mudstone and 2.) Concretions of sandy texture concentrated in the thick upper sandstone with clay and siderite in the mud-grained concretions.
Three pieces of information need to be emailed to me to keep your smiley.
1.) What type of concretions do you see here?
2.) Describe what the ground looks and feels like around these formations.
3.) Did you notice the few formations that had dark gold formations that appeared to be attached to the lighter sandstone colored ones? What do you think these are and how do you think they are formed?
