WAIHEKE ISLAND was discovered and settled by Maori approximately 1000 years ago, The first traces of Europeans arrived with the missionary Samuel Marsden in the early 1800’s, several years after Captain Cook passed by and acknowledged the island in his travels through the Hauraki Gulf. A ferry ride away from Auckland, Waiheke Island is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. Onetangi beach’s two kilometre stretch of white sand is great for water activities such as windsurfing, swimming and the occasional surf. The beach is lined with houses and has some great cafe´ and restaurant dining options. During the 1820’s the famous Hongi Heke killed most of the inhabitants in a big battle at Onetangi beach. Unsurprisingly, Onetangi means “weeping sands”. Pohutukawa Reserve is a piece of hilly reserve sometimes referred to as Waiheke Reserve.
