Geocache Description:

This cache is at a fascinating natural rock formation in a Great Works Regional Land Trust Conservation Area. Balancing Rock has been a favorite site for hikes & date parties for generations of locals.

On a Great Works Regional Land Trust Conservation Area. The formal name for this type of rock formation is a "glacial erratic". OR, it could have been erected by the Druids for virginal sacrifices, a use that local teenagers try very hard to emulate & continue. KEEP READING:

Latest History: As you can see from szrezak's note of 11 April 2016, it seems that an old cache has resurfaced. The Two Reprobates have had to replace the cache several times, but the old ones may be hiding nearby. If any cache you find has been placed by the Two Reprobates, you can take credit for it - only one credit, though, no matter how many you find!

Previous history: The Two Reprobates, Carl & Rick, placed a cache at Balancing Rock on 22 September 2005. However, the then-landowner did not grant us permission for the cache, and hence it was never published. Since then, as near as we can tell from the log, almost three dozen (!!) people/groups have found the cache on their own, and logged their finds, the latest being 4 September 2011.

The Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) having acquired the land, graciously granted us permission to place this cache. We welcome all who found the previous "almost-a-cache" to log it as a find. So now properly published in early January, 2012, cachers started "officially" finding the cache.

However, in early February, 2013, the cache was moved from its hiding spot. We had to temporarily disable it. Once again, people still kept finding it! Four finds, including one person's first geocache! In mid-September 2013, The Two Reprobates moved the cache a bit, refreshed the contents, and published the new co-ordinates. On 24 September 2014, the Two Reprobates had to, once again, replace the missing cache!

At the latter web site, you will also find links to a Google Map of the area, and a down-loadable Orris Falls Conservation Area Trail Map.

The GWRLT allows public access, but not by motorized vehicles. Park right off Emery's Bridge Road (co-ordinates below). [43 16.123; 070 41.694] The deeded right-of-way takes you right to Balancing Rock. The terrain rating of a "three" is based on some fairly steep slopes in the last 50 yards; most of the roadway/path is flat & straight. The cache is a (plastic) ammunition box, a short distance from Balancing Rock itself. A First-to-Find Certificate, suitable for framing, signed by us both, is in the cache, as well as suitable trade goods.
Continuing on the path, if you are interested, will take you to the very scenic Orris Falls.

Congratulations to First-to-Find "marcipanek"! Published date: 7 January. Found 7:30 AM 7 January.
