The Radcliffe Knit Mill began operations in 1862. The water powered
factory produced wool, stocking yarn, shirts and fleece linings
used in the manufacture of gloves. The mill burned to the ground in
1893 and was rebuilt several years later. In 1938, due to
competition from new factories in the west and the diversion of
much of the river water to the Easton Reservoir, the factory became
unprofitable and closed. Only parts of a foundation remain now. The
cache is not in or near the foundation.
Warning - There are cliffs on the way to the cache. Waypoint
PA is on a path that guides you around the cliff. It would not be a
good idea to try this at night.
Parking - You can park on Riverside Drive and take a short
hike to the trailhead on Whitney Avenue. See waypoints PK and
TH.
Interesting Sights - Part of the building foundation can be
seen at the FOUND waypoint. The sluice that fed the waterwheel that
drove the mill is visible at SLUICE as is another part of the
foundation. The remnants of the dam that diverted water to the
sluice can be seen at DAM. Finally, you can take a short hike to
the top of Indian Ledges at LEDGES. Walk below to view the area
where Native Americans camped out. Ledges extended over the cliff
face that provided weather protection, but they have since broken
off. Archeologists have found numerous Native American artifacts
here.
