Geocache Description:

The cache you are seeking is a magnetic key holder. It is not, I repeat, IS NOT, located on any of the artwork or sculptures at the site. It is also not on any of the electrical equipment. Please do not climb on or around the displays, just think of where a magnetic key holder would be located. There is abundant parking on the site!

The purpose of this cache is to entice you to enjoy an area of downtown Wichita which was once a great place, then a terrible eyesore and finally a place worthy of visiting once again.

This is the site of The Coleman Company’s plant A, one of the original manufacturing plants in Wichita. Built in the 1920’s, it remained in operation until 1990 when it was closed and operations moved to the current location on North Hydraulic. You can find out a great deal more information about the Coleman Company history by visiting their website. Many comments have been made about the site being turned into a parking lot, but what many don’t know it that due to the level and type of contamination on the site, the only use the State of Kansas will allow is a parking lot. That being said, Coleman has had, and will continue to have, an active remediation effort on the site until it is clean.

What you will see when you visit this cache is the result of a partnership between Sedgwick County, The Rotary Club of Wichita and the Coleman Company. These partners saw an opportunity to create something useful, educational and aesthetically pleasing to serve the citizens and visitors of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

The Rotary Plaza features a Time Tower more than 40’ tall and an interpretive wall loaded with history about Rotary Club of Wichita (one of the oldest and largest in the world) and the Coleman Company. The area will serve as a gateway to Old Town, the Arena and other downtown areas.

It is also interesting to note that every brick you see in the fence columns, planters and arches (over 40,000 of them) were salvaged from the buildings which once occupied this site. On the west side of the parking lot, facing the Coleman Factory Outlet, is a duplicate of the original St. Francis Street entrance to the manufacturing building, including the white cast stone pieces. The steel trusses over the vehicle entrances are replicas of roof trusses found in the gymnasium of the old building as well.

Please take some time to look at the artwork on the wall, read some of the history and enjoy a beautiful kinetic sculpture which takes great advantage of our Kansas wind!
