Geocache Description:

The cache, a little plastic barrel is hidden in the outer sidewall of the newly built staircase scaling the viaduct. A comfortable parking place can be found on top of the former railway-embankment, on the South-West side of the viaducts.

The Viaduct of Biatorbágy Right after midnight, on September 13, 1931, the railway viaduct of Biatorbágy together with a passing train was blown up. The blast swept away the train and killed 22 passengers. The government blamed the crime on the communists and introduced strict measures therefore this incident is very famous in the 20th century Hungarian history. The real offender, obviously not a communist but a slightly insane “serial-blaster”, Szilveszter Matuska was later arrested and sentenced first to death later eased to life-sentence. During the war days, in 1944 Matuska escaped and had never found again. The first viaduct was built in 1884 while the second followed 5 years later. The bridges were developed and strengthened many times, but finally – along with straightening the curvy railroad for (relatively) high-speed trains – closed for vehicles. The last train crossed the viaducts in 1979. Currently one of the viaducts, the renovated north one, is opened for pedestrian public. You may walk or ride your bicycle on the viaduct. Ideal place to take photos. Train lovers sometimes visit the place and run a hobby electric train bringing joy for kids. In 2022 the viaduct became official bicycle road, part of the newly designed main bicycle route connecting Budapest and the Balaton. This cache is a renewed (and slightly displaced) version of the previously archived Viaduct-cache.
