The Slocan Valley Rail Trail stretches 50 km from South Slocan to Slocan City. This is one of the many scenic points along the trail, with excellent views of the Slocan River and the Valhalla Mountains. Access is either from the trailhead parking area at the north end of Slocan Park, or there is trail access and room for a few cars at the end of Koch Siding Road.
In the good ole days, steam engines from the mines of the Silvery Slocan carried heavy loads of rock - silver-rich ore - along this railbed to the smelters in Nelson, Trail and Northport. First by rail and then by boat, this railway helped open the Kootenay frontier. Is this nugget a long lost chunk of coal that would have fired the massive boiler of a 2-8-0 Baldwin - imagine the lonely steam whistle echoing off the valley walls?
Perhaps, if I had not just received it at Christmas as a gag gift from a relative. Nonetheless, it makes a good caching container. Enjoy!
