Thomas Laidlaw (1813-1876) was a prominent Yass businessman and was
greatly respected in the community. At various times he was a
banker, postmaster, merchant, politician & magistrate.

Laidlaw's Grave
This is the site of the first cemetery in Yass, consecrated in
1838. When Thomas' new wife died suddenly in 1842, she was buried
here. Later he would acquire the land that included this cemetery
(by this stage there was a new cemetery on the current site). Just
before his death in 1876 he converted to the Catholic faith so that
he could be buried with her. Their graves overlook that section of
the main street of Yass which bears their name.
This site remained isolated on the property for many years, until
very recently when it was subdivided. The approval of the
subdivision required that the cemetery area be preserved, and that
Laidlaw's grave was fenced and signs erected. So, after many years,
this historical area is now available to the public. Hopefully it
will survive!
The cache is located within the park area, but away from the grave.
Please be careful retrieving and replacing the cache.
There are great views of the town from here (if you can see over
the high cement wall!).
