Geocache Description:

This is another in our N.O.R.G. (North Oconee River Greenway) series with some interesting Athens history. Be sure to check out the other N.O.R.G. caches - N.O.R.G. and Confederate Armory that are in the area. The above coordinates take you to a sign that has the information to complete the next part.

With the above coordinates you will be standing in front of one of the granite piers of the Oconee River trestle. The granite was hauled from Stone Mountain by the Georgia Railroad. The trestles allowed the rapid growth of the railroad business in Athens and propelled its economic prosperity in the late 1800's. By the first quarter of the 1900's Athens had generated a web of rail which boasted 5 railroad companies. They were the Georgia Railroad, Central Georgia Railway, Gainesville Midland Railway, Seaboard Air Line Railway and Southern Railway. Final cache coordinates: N33 57.__ (A,B,C) W083 22.__ (A,B,C) For your North coordinates go to the Georgia Railroad sign. Who was the Georgia Railroad Factory space leased to? A: Sears & Roebuck - coordinates 806 B: Hanna Manufacturing Baseball Bat Co. - coordinates 364 C: Ingles Mercentile - coordinates 871 For the West coordinates find the Southern Railway sign. In what year did a crowd gather at the Southern Railway depot to greet the Georiga Bulldawgs football team returning from Yale following a 14-0 victory? A: 1939 - .187 B: 1920 - .290 C: 1927 - .008
