A medium sized cache positioned in an optimum spot to enjoy our favourite view along the Duddon estuary towards the Scafell range of mountains. Stealth is required as the cache location is close to the boardwalk leading to/from the car-park, which is the reason for the difficulty rating. This place is popular with Muggles of all shapes, ages and sizes.
Roanhead beach is a sandy beach with large areas of sand dunes situated three miles north of Barrow-in-Furness. Strong currents make it unsuitable for swimming but the sand dunes and coastal scenery is very good. The beach and surrounding dunes are well known for the National trust’s conservation work and this conservation area is also known as Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve. Dogs need to be kept on leads amongst the dunes because of grazing livestock and nesting birds, but can be exercised on the beach away from other beach users and roosting waders.
The National Nature reserve is home to the common lizard and all six native amphibians (Common Frog, Common Toad, Natterjack toad, Smooth Newt, Palmate Newt and Great Crested Newt) occur on the site which supports around 15% of the British Natterjack toad population. The Natterjack toads are Europe's noisiest amphibians, and breed in the natural and man-made pools throughout the site, where you can hear them croaking their distinctive chorus between April and June. This species is legally protected from disturbance and the best way to see them is on a National Trust guided walk. Access to the beach and the reserve is via the boardwalk from the car park.
The short stay car park for the beach is free but can fill up quickly. The road and turning circle immediately outside the entrance have double yellow lines so be aware. At summer peak times the area gets really busy and parking wardens have been known to strike!
The small hut adjacent to the car park sells ice creams and drinks, although they tend to keep an irregular pattern of opening hours, probably dependant on the weather! There are public toilets 30 meters along the road, heading towards the lakes.
There are cracking views across the Duddon estuary, towards the Scafell range of mountains, and opposite the main beach to Blackcombe. Apparently, if some internet search results for Roanhead beach suggest, the beach is also popular with naturists, although we’ve never spotted a naked rambler amongst the dunes all the times we’ve visited the beach.
We hope you enjoy your visit to what we think is a very special place. Happy Geocaching.
