Geocache Description:

This is another cache in the series based on interesting features we have seen on maps. In this case it was another "stone" that caught our attention.

The cache is situated at a "Gowk Stane." It is placed to bring visitors to this interesting stone, but also to mark the occasion of the Quadbarrels completing the Aljoland (Irvine Valley) traditional caches between Galston and Dungavel.

"Gowk Stane" can be translated from Scots to mean Cuckoo or Fool Stone, which is where the cache gets its name from.

This particular stone, as with many others, is a glacial erratic, carried and deposited here during the last ice age.

The cache is not just placed for the visit to the stone, but for the beauty of the route to get up to it. We have spent many hours in and around this beautiful valley, and the minor roads often offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. You can also continue on foot or bike North from the parking area on the old Weavers Trail that runs from Darvel to Eaglesham, and takes you in to the Whitelee Forest and Windfarm area where you can grab some more of our caches!

To get to the cache, park at the suggested coordinates, which is just about big enough for two cars. Walk due South back along the road until you reach a fence corner. Head towards the cache from here and there should be no need to cross any fences. There will be a need however, to cross Glen Water, and wellies are well advised!

The stone itself is found at N55 39.433 W4 15.590, but is pretty hard to miss.
