Geocache Description:

This cache has been muggled twice so I am changing it's size and location. It is now a magnetic nano. My intention is to bring you to this area and let you view the area and the new white water project that is under construction. The cache is on the same bench the old cache was on. Sit facing the water and on the right side of the bench. Reach under the arm rest (down low) with your right hand.

This is number one in a series of four. Columbus has 4 dams in the county located on the Chattahoochee River and we will visit all four. Each dam has its own history as well as grand views and other local history in the surrounding area.

Starting in UPTOWN, we have the Eagle and Phenix Dam which was built in 1868. This dam is next to the defunct Eagle and Phenix Mill that has been renovated into luxury loft Apartments. The old water tower still stands next to the property for those who like to waymark. The Columbus River Walk runs between the river and the lofts. This dam was built to provide power for the operation of the mill. The dam is now being breached in a $23 million dollar white water rafting project. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that supporters say the project will be the longest whitewater course in an urban setting in the world when completed. The island just below the old mill power house will be transformed into a spectator area and a foot bridge will be build from the river walk to the island. While I was in high school, I worked two summers in the Eagle and Phenix mill’s machine shop. That was in 1965 and 1966. It was during those years that the mill bricked up the windows and added air conditioning.
