Geocache Description:

This is number three in a series of four. Columbus has 4 dams in the county located on the Chattahoochee River. Each dam has its own history as well as grand views and other local history in the surrounding area.

North Highlands Dam Built in 1899. The North Highlands Dam was the first large dam in the South and powered the Bibb Cotton Mill which was built in 1898. Today, the dam is owned by the Georgia Power Co. It produces hydroelectric power and impounds the Bibb Pond. The dam crosses the river in the Bibb City area of Columbus, one mile south of Oliver Dam. Many local people call this the Bibb Mill Dam. The dam originally provided power to the Bibb Mill which was the largest textile mill in the United States. The Bibb mill created a village for its employees named Bibb City. Bibb City was recently consolidated as a part of Columbus. The old Bibb water tower sits above the dam and a dated part of the mill (1920) faces 1st Ave at 38th Street. Bibb City itself was originally homes rented by the mill to its family of workers. The narrow winding streets were designed more for pedestrians than motor vehicles as the mill workers had only a few blocks to walk to work. The Bibb City School is closed now and falling into decay.
Call 1
Dispatcher: “911”.
Caller: “Yes, I'm at 1st Avenue. The Bibb City Mill is blowing up!”
At about midnight on October 30, 2008 the vacant mill caught fire. When all the flames were put out the four story mill had been reduced to rubble. Only the first Ave façade (dated 1920) was left standing. A large section of the old mill, which was unattached to the main building, has been renovated as an event center named the Rivermill. The event center rents its halls for weddings, receptions, meetings and even has a small wedding chapel on site.

The walk In: Park on Linden Point at the Riverwalk entry. A wheel chair ramp is available. Walk south on the Riverwalk. At light pole #8 look up to the left and you can see the old Bibb water tower and part of the Rivermill building. At light pole #5 look right and you can see the warning barricade warning boaters not to enter as they would be in dangerous waters near the dam. Look north from here and you can see the J.R. Allen Parkway over the river. Light pole #5 is a “What’s That Fer” for Kurdyboy. (A local geo cacher). Pass light poll #4 and find GZ. From here you have a view of the Bibb Dam, The Georgia Power plant and the remnants of the rear of the old mill. The cache is an easy find. Please re-hide it so it can’t be seen as it is readily visible to muggles from its hiding location if not fully concealed.
The cache is a small lock and lock. Muggles are not ever present, but the box is in a place easily seen by them if not re-hidden well.
Congrats to BamaMama504 and BamaDad330 for co FIRST TO FIND.
