Geocache Description:

Small, well hidden cache. Please watch for muggles and be cautious during hunting season as hunters often park and move out into the swamp from this area.

This area is owned and managed as the Winnimusset Wildlife Management Area where the MA Fish & Game Association stocks pheasants for hunting. In the very distant past it was stocked with early American settlers for hunting of a different sort. In 1675, King Philip (son of Massasoit) and his warriors surprised Captain Wheeler and his soldiers in what is now called Wheeler's Surprise, located close to this spot. Thus began the battle against the settlers in the Quaboag Plantation. After a three-day siege in which nearly one hundred Puritans took refuge from flaming arrows in Ayers Tavern (located on Foster Hill in West Brookfield), King Philip and his warriors were driven off by soldiers from eastern settlements. Some of the settlers were saved, but the smoldering Quaboag Plantation was abandoned until 1686 when it was successfully resettled. Congrat's to LaFountain's for a quick find on a blustery day!
