The farmers of New Braintree sent 200 tons of cheese, butter, and pork to market in Boston in 1822 by wagon. The charge for overland freight during the 20’s and early 30’s was about $10 per ton. Shipping via the railroad reduced cost to about $3.50 per ton. Over 1,000 milk cows lived in New Braintree by the 19th century (more cows than people until recent years) and the town produced over 200,000 pounds of cheese annually.
