The farmers of New Braintree sent 200 tons of cheese, butter, and
pork to market in Boston in 1822 by wagon. The charge for overland
freight during the 20’s and early 30’s was about $10
per ton. Shipping via the railroad reduced cost to about $3.50 per
ton. Puritan women were the artisans of cheese during this period
just as they were in their previous homeland of East Anglia (a
peninsula of eastern England).
