csoaper71: The historic marker still hasn't been replaced after 6 months and the theft rate of any cache placed here is extremely high. Until the marker is restored, I'm not going to try to maintain a cache here.

Geocache Description:

Third in the series, Historic Places of northern Fauquier County

Presley Neville O'Bannon was born in 1776 at the house that once was located down this abandoned road. A "Fauquier Native Son", he is little known around here, but well known world wide.

The following is excerpted from Wikipedia:

Presley Neville O'Bannon entered the Marine Corps on January 18, 1801. As a 1st Lieutenant he was assigned to the USS Argus where he commanded a detachment of seven Marines and two Navy midshipmen during the Tripoli campaign of the First Barbary War. He led the successful attack in the Battle of Derna on April 27, 1805, giving the Marines' Hymn its line "to the shores of Tripoli". Some sources say he was the first man to raise the American flag over foreign soil.

O'Bannon resigned from the Marine Corps as a Major on March 6,1807. He moved to Logan County, Kentucky and served in the Kentucky State Senate from 1824 to 1826. He died in Russellville, Kentucky in 1850 at the age of 74. His remains were removed to the Frankfort Cemetery in 1919.

Three Navy ships have been named in his honor, one launched in 1919, one in 1942, and one launched in 1978.

The family cemetery is also located about 3/4 of a mile along this road, which is owned by the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation. It is currently overgrown and impassable in places. Please don't attempt to walk it. A state-placed historical marker is located at the pull off/parking area.

No longer a cash and dash due to high theft rate of Marshall caches. However, for some of you who have seen a similar container, it may be very easy.
