New year, time for a new cache! Thanks to the Discover Pass sign near the highway, I recently noticed this Wildlife Area that had previously eluded me. The sun decided to shine which gave Bud, Superstar and I an opportunity to finally hide a cache together.
During the early 1970s, the construction of State Highway 20, crossing the Swinomish Channel to Fidalgo Island, was built through a portion of Telegraph Slough. This created a shorter inter-tidal slough on the north side of the highway, and a freshwater wetland on the south side. This provides an excellent area for wildlife and bird watching!
Although this is a wildlife viewing area, we had wildlife viewing us while hiding the cache! We enjoy caching as often as our schedules allow, and hope you have a hoot too ;)
** As entertaining as your log entries have been, I feel some further direction may be needed. The route we traveled to place the cache is as follows: head east out of the parking area for several yards, and find your easiest route south to the treeline. Keep heading south where there will be one small water area to travel around/over. While researching the area for cache placement we were able to travel easily on solid ground. When we came back after the snow the ground was much more saturated, but navigable. I would suggest bringing a pair of rubber boots to be on the safe side most seasons. I was wearing snow boots, more fashionable than functional, while placing the cache and got only the toes muddy. HIP WADERS ARE NOT REQUIRED ;) Be cautious traveling from the parking lot to the treeline, do keep in mind this area is a slough. Terrain difficulty reflects this.
Please be respectful while searching for the cache to preserve the area. Cache is above the salal (ground covering plant). DO NOT dig through and destroy the salal. If you find the cache, hide it as well as you found it.
Cache is a small plastic container. Original contents include a bison tube for FTF, working pedometer and other various swag for all ages.
Driving Directions:
From Interstate 5, go west on Highway 20 about six miles. Parking area is on the south side of the divided highway. West-bound traffic may make a U-turn onto east-bound lanes just before the Twin Bridges.
