Parihaka is an old eroded volcanic cone rising to 241 metres above sea level. There are extensive remnants of Moari settlement extending along 3km of ridge and including three heavily defended pa sites. More than 100 household terraces and 300 kumara storage pits have been identified. A part of one of the pa along Dobbies Track has been interpreted for the public. the pa complex at Parihaka was the site of a significant battle and massacre in the 1700's. there are several different versions of the battle. However it appears that the Parawhau people defending the pa were defeated and eaten by a southern raiding party.
49.5ha of the Parihaka Scenic Reserve was gifted to the people of Whangarei in 1910 by Herbert Dobbie, a railway manager and amateur botanist who published two books about New Zealand ferns. Whangarei's War Memorial stands at the summit of Parihaka and offers spectacular views of the city and harbour.Cache is approx half way along Dobbies track , a small side track is signposted as the pa site with an information board showing the pa layout and general history . GZ is about two or three minutes along this short detour at the very end. Start point is either from the summit descending Dobbies track or Hokianga track from Mair park bridge area. Estimate 20-25 min one way.
