Vehicle access to John Wilson Ocean Drive has been a contentious issue which has vexed Dunedin City Councillors and the public over the past few years. The road was closed during sewerage upgrades and during this time there was a reported increase in good behaviour and in the frequency of some of the less commonly seen coastal birds and other critters. The road has also recently become a popular cyclist and pedestrian destination due to the flat nature and absence of cars. After much indecision it looks like a final resolution to open the gates has been made with the DCC voting to reopen the gates and restore vehicular access with restrictions after July 2012 thus restoring a popular scenic drive.
