Geocache Description:

Small container located near the Tees Barrage remember to bring a pen or pencil to sign log.

One famous Teesside-built ship was the 377 feet long Talpore, built by Pearse & Co of Stockton in 1860. It was a troop ship for the River Indus, and was the world's largest river steamer at the time.
It was a four-funnelled paddle steamer, designed to be used as a troop ship on the River Indus in India, and could accommodate 800 troops and their officers, in two tiers of cabins. Funnels and edges of lifeboats painted black. The dimensions of the original ship were, length 377ft, beam 46, breadth over paddle boxes 74, depth 5, depth at paddle-shafts 12, depth at top of arched girders 18, working draught of water 2, displacement at 2ft draught 739 tons, tonnage 3911 old measurement and was the largest river steamer at the time.
The engines were built by James Watt and Co of London and Birmingham and were 220 nominal horsepower, having horizontal cylinders of 55 inches diameter and 6ft stroke, and the diameter of the paddle wheel was 26ft.
