Geocache Description:

An easy find at a beautiful view point on the West Coast of the South Island. The find includes a short (7 minutes for us unfit folk) uphill walk with a maze at the end. Please park at the given co-ordinates and do not drive up the hill.

This cache is placed in our favourite spot in New Zealand, on Gentle Annie Point. From the GZ you will see a beautiful view of the West Coast and possibly spot Hector dolphins. The day before we placed the cache, we saw a fur seal on the beach.

Gentle Annie is named after Gentle Annie Point. As local legend has it, many, many years ago there lived an English couple here, the wife being Annie. Feeling so isolated and lonely here she deiced to take her own life over the point.

An alternative to this local legend is provided by Max Cryer in his book, 'Curious Kiwi Words', "An old popular song by Stephen Foster carries the lines: 'When the springtime comes, Gentle Annie, and wildflowers are scattered o'er the plain'. That's believed to be the source of the popularity of the place name Gentle Annie within New Zealand - several hills and gorges, a bridge, a bay and a hill track all carry Gentle Annie's name. There's a legend too, that a quiet mannered 19th century New Zealand barmaid called Annie made an impact on local miners, so that her presence also contributed to the high profile of the name. Either way - Stephen Foster song or real barmaid - Annie reached well into 20th Century New Zealand as well. A popular restaurant and a pleasant country music group carry her name, and an electrical appliance manufacturer capitalised on the warm popularity of the name by naming one of the washing machines in their range Gentle Annie."

Park at S41 30.570 E171 56.744 and do not attempt to drive further up the hill as this is a road used by the landowners and farmers and you will have to park in such a way that could block their access. The landowners are aware of the cache and the walkway has public access. Follow the road and take the left hand split (if you go straight this is private property so please don't go there). Solve the maze - fun for the kids - and find the cache. Cache is a 200ml snap lock container covered in black tape (courtesy of An Eye for an Eye, a Cache for a cache). It does not contain a pencil (we forgot one) so please take your own.

After finding the cache you may like to walk down the other side of the hill onto the beach. This is a very pretty coastline and well worth spending a few days exploring.
