You are looking for something "hanging around" near an easy public trail between Oak Island Drive and the beach. There is a new container as of April 2025.
Parking is free from October 1st through March 31st. Paid Parking is enforced from April 1 - September 30 between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM daily. NOTE: Resident-Only Parking spaces are actively enforced from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM daily, and may be monitored 24 hours / day. Please check here for current parking rules.
The Big Davis Canal, a tidal creek that runs midway through Oak Island, was built during the development of the island's streets and accesses by Hannon A. Templeton, Jr. The Canal goes from the Intracoastal Waterway on the west end to 40th Street East. That's a long stretch of water to cross if you live on the north side of the Canal and want to get to the beach! The first trail to be constructed across the Canal begins behind the Oak Island Recreation Center and serves as a nature trail as well as access to the beach. Under the water tower you can learn about native trees and wildlife, then begin your trek through the woods and across three bridges to the other side. A section of trail near the second bridge gets flooded during extremely high tides, but this is rare. Please stay on/near the trail, no bushwhacking required; replace the cache carefully when you are done. This is a heavily traveled trail in tourist season, so choose your time and be patient to avoid muggles! Please be a good steward of this great resource: walk your bike across the bridges, follow rules about fishing and crabbing, and carry trash out. Take a rest on one of the benches if you get tired, and bring your camera for great bird photos in the morning marsh!
