Geocache Description:

A easy find in a beautiful location in Vancouver. Note: This cache is only available from 0600 to 2230 (that is 6:00 am to 10:30 pm). Please be considerate of these times.

This cache has been placed with expressed permission of the VA Portland Health Care System. Please stay on the sidewalks where appropriate and be mindful of the area. This is a no-swag cache but feel free to drop a traveler! Make sure the container fully closes before you leave. There is one trackable in this cache that is intended to remain in it. Please feel free to "discover" it, but leave it within the cache container.

As you enter the garden grounds, you will see a large fountain with the POW/MIA logo in the middle of it. POW/MIA stands for Prisoner of War/Missing in Action. The original logo was created in 1971, depicts the bust of a man, watch tower with a guard holding a rifle, and a strand of barbed wire. While it was an unofficial logo for twenty years for those lost in Vietnam, the logo was officially recognized in 1991 by the 101st Congress as "symbol for those lost" and being applied to those not just lost during the Vietnam War, but all American wars before and since.

The Vietnam Memorial Garden at the VA Medical Center located in Vancouver Washington is located on what once was originally the U.S. Army Barnes General Hospital. It was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers and activated in 1941 and was subsequently closed in 1946. The purpose of the garden, which began construction in 2001 and was dedicated November 15th of 2002, is to create a symbolic journey, with its beginning in the Pacific Northwest, through Southeast Asia and then back home.

In 2007 "Lady Bell", 1963 UH 1B Iroquois helicopter, was moved from its original home in the Salmon Creek area of Vancouver to its new permanent home at the Vietnam Memorial Garden. Local community volunteers helped repaint and refurbish the engineless Huey to its current state. Close by the cache zone, you also have an opportunity to tour the Veterans Museum (admission is free). Current hours of operation are:
  • Thursday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Friday: 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Saturday: 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
The Museum building, built in 1940, is one of the three oldest buildings on the Vancouver Campus and houses a range of World War II and earlier artifacts. The one-story facility was originally designed to be the radio transmitter building for Pearson Field.

Please exercise extreme stealth when retrieving this cache and be mindful of the grounds.
