Candelo was established 150 years ago and retains the peaceful village image and atmosphere. There are a number of stories about how Candelo was named. One is that it is named after Candelo, Italy.
Earlier settlers of Candelo had the foresight to establish the beautiful park beside the river, and today it offers shade in summer, a spectacular colour show in Autumn and a year-round meeting place for locals and visitors. It will beckon you as you drive past, so why not stop for a while, Candelo today still retains many of its nineteenth century old buildings. St Joseph's church is the oldest catholic church in the Bega Valley.
On the first Sunday of every month the atmosphere is transformed by the many visitors who flock to the markets. This thriving market sees over 150 stall holders on the banks of the Candelo river and displays a wide variety of arts, craft, clothes, books and fresh produce.
