Welcome to our fourth group of Geocaches in & around the Forest of Dean. Around English Bicknor is a circular route of about 5 miles, with English Bicknor as its centrepiece. The village is situated on a hill above the surrounding fields and woodland. It is a very old village with a Norman church & an ancient motte & bailey (the castle no longer exists). The village was first recorded as a hamlet as early as 1066. There are 9 caches in the series & some lovely views along the way.
Cache 6 is hidden in a very obvious spot if you look at the title and use the clue. The cache is camouflaged slightly to blend into its surroundings and hopefully keep it from beady-eyed Muggles. After bagging the cache you can either cross the road & up over the stile, turning left behind the cottages, and along the mown path to the first field boundary, where you travel uphill to the tarmac road above – or you could walk along the road from the kissing gate & turn right at the PF sign. You will walk uphill for 2 fields before reaching a stile & the tarmac road. Cache 7 will be found by turning right along the tarmac road and then left, over a stile, at a damaged PF sign – only a few yards away. Between Caches 6 & 7 look behind you for views of Carterspiece, Edge End and the edges of Christchurch village. When you are almost at cache 7 in front of you and to your right is a panoramic view of, from left to right, Sugar Loaf, Hills of Abergavenny, Welsh Marches, and the Malverns on the far right in the distance – enjoy!!
