Geocache Description:

Barbados consists of eleven parishes, St George being one of the only two that doesn't have any coastline (St Thomas being the second).

The St. George Church was rebuilt in 1784 after the original church, built between 1637 and 1641, had been destroyed in the hurricane of 1780. As such, it is the oldest church in Barbados. The "new" building has stood the test of time; it was one of four parish churches to survive the great hurricane of 1831, and remained intact during those of 1898 and 1955.

The chancel and tower are 20th century additions. The church is rich in memorial sculptures and stained glass windows, but its most striking feature is the magnificent altar painting, The Resurrection, by Benjamin West. West was the only American to become president of the Royal Academy, a post he held until his death in 1829. The painting’s history is a story in itself, ending in the application of an eye patch on the centurion in the lower left. Ancestors of opposing American civil war generals Meade and Lee rest in peace at this church.

The church has a lovely clock work that can be heard around the neighborhood, and often is one of the first sounds I can hear in the early tropical mornings.

Geocaches easily disappear in Barbados. Please replace carefully the cache, making sure it is out of view.
