“Horse Camp” a Mtn Adventure on a great white mountain, Mt. Shasta.
Horse Camp is an area on Mt. Shasta and the Shasta Alpine Lodge is your destination, after you bag this cache. The cache is located along a trail, just outside the Wilderness area, that leads to the most popular staging area for winter fun and spring/summer ascents of 14,179’ high Mt. Shasta.
Trail signs near the cache, indicate that you have travelled 1.0 miles from Bunny Flat and that you are only .7 miles from your goal, a wonderful stone cabin, constructed in 1922 and situated at the base of Oberlman’s Causeway and Avalanche Gulch.
When you reach Horse Camp, sign the log book inside the Shasta Alpine Lodge, which is situated at 7950 feet. In the summer there is seasonal water and the lodge is staffed by friendly, knowledgeable caretakers.
This cache is a small metal container, placed on January 14th, 2012, during the driest winter on record. While there was sledding going on at Bunny Flat, the cache area was bare of snow. It is very likely that the cache would be accessible if snow is less than a couple feet at Bunny Flat, because it is in a sunny location. But in a typical winter, this would be under many feet of snow and it would be a challenge to access.
