I got the idea for this cache from one I found in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Traveller’s Challenge (GC2Q4VC), where a cacher has to find a number of caches in each category. One category was “critters.” Searching through my finds, I discovered I had lots of caches with the name of an animal in the title, and I started thinking about the wildlife in Maryland. So, here is your challenge, should you choose to accept it:
- Find 40 caches with the name of an animal in the title.
- Each cache will represent a single species of wildlife in Maryland. For example, a cache called Bear Den can be used to represent the black bear.
- All species used must be native to Maryland – not introduced or domesticated.
- Each species may only be used once. That means you can only use a cache with “bear” in the title once, since there is only one species of bear in Maryland, the black bear. You could use “swallow” five times, since there are five species of swallow in Maryland. A cache with “bird” in the title is pretty much a freebie, since you can use it to represent any bird species found in Maryland.
- At least 10 caches should represent a mammal species found in Maryland.
- At least 10 caches should represent a bird species found in Maryland.
- At least 2 caches should represent a reptile or amphibian species found in Maryland.
- The remaining 18 caches can be in any of the above categories – your choice.
- When logging your find on this cache, you must list each cache you are using, the geocaching code, the date you found it, and the species it represents. The cache lists must be separated into mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian.
- Caches can be of any type, from anywhere. Archived caches you have found do count.
- You must also find the cache hidden at the coordinates and sign the log.
- Any questions, please ask!
Hint – a good place to look for lists of species found in Maryland is the Maryland Department of Natural Resources webpage. They tend to list both native and introduced species, though, so be careful. Visit the website here.
This cache has been placed with the permission of the Maryland DNR. The actual hide is a difficulty of 1.5 but because of the paperwork and research time required to complete this challenge, I am setting it at a difficulty of 5.
