Geocache Description:

A small cache in an accessible location which is ideal for spotting seals at play and whales as they enter the waters of Scapa Flow. The cache is situated at a WW2 searchlight emplacement on a coastal path out of Stromness.

This cache is sited on a coastal path from Stromness and is well worth a trip if you are based in the town. if driving to stromness there is ample parking if you drive through the campsite on the shore. When walking toward the cache there are usually plenty of seals on the skerries just off shore or, if the tide is in, swimming in the water. The path takes you past a former gun emplacement and a picnic bench before you get to the searchlight emplacement.

the searchlight is ideally placed to give sheltered views across the water to the emplacements on Graemsay and Hoy (observation posts still clearly visible). before you is one of the two remaining major entrances into Scapa Flow, which is often a good place to see Orcas as they come into Orkney's waters in search of seals on their annual migration.

This is a well trodden path so care will have to be taken not to give the game away... Please be sure to reposition the cache so it won't be easily found. Please note that the cache is not located within the nearby drystone wall and that this should not be disturbed.
