Geocache Description:

Muggle area.

The Navajo County Community College District Governing Board had their first meeting Jan. 2, 1973. Board members were Ross L. Tyler (Winslow), Walter S. Carpenter (Holbrook), Dean Porter (Snowflake), Tilden Wilbur (Pinetop), Eddie james Arthur (Kayenta). The Board adopted the concept of "decentralized educational delivery system of mini-centers." The name Northland Pioneer College was chosen because the service area was in northern Arizona and the mini-center concept was in the pioneering stage. The college opened Sept 3, 1974 with an enrollment of 2,010 students. The first building at the Painted Desert Campus in Holbrook was in the leased Owen Federal Building. On the current campus, the Tewa Building was originally part of the 1st Combat Evaluation group from Barksdale Air Force Base from 1968-1993. Detachment 2 was stationed in Holbrook as part of the United States Strategic Air Command to help evaluate aircrew with radar scoring of simulated strategic bombing.
