About South Africa
South Africa is a beautiful country at the most southern end of the continent of Africa.
South Africans are proud of their country and natural heritage. South Africa is blessed with lots of bright sunshine, a glorious coastline, magnificent mountains, extensive Nature Reserves and Wildlife Parks, sophisticated cities, world class airports and the most amazing, friendly, loving people!
About Pretoria
Pretoria is located in the Northern part of the Gauteng province and is the "de facto" National Capital City of South Africa. It is fondly known as the "Jacaranda City" due to the thousands of Jacaranda trees in full bloom with purple blossoms during the month of October. Pretoria was established in 1855, making it much older than the city of Johannesburg. Pretoria has a rich history and is a peaceful, warm city.
About the Venue
The Voortrekker Monument is situated on a beautiful nature reserve, surrounded by indigenous fauna and flora. Some game species have been reintroduced, such as springbok, zebra and black wildebeest. The area is teeming with birdlife and their serene calls will make you believe you are far away from the city!
The MEGA location has the most fantastic views of the city of Pretoria one side and the distant view of Johannesburg on the other side.
There is a variety of accommodation available within a 5Km radius, including camping, guest houses, bed and breakfast, hotels, lodges, etc. We will post some links to various accommodation websites on the local Geocaching website for South Africa http://www.geocachingsa.com.
Access from OR Tambo International Airport is very convenient via the R21 motorway, which meets at the Fountains circle, just a stone's throw away from the Voortrekker Monument. There are two Gautrain stations available within a 12 minute drive (Centurion and Hatfield).
For the local geocachers, this is during the School Holidays, and an ideal time to have a great, fun-filled, geocaching weekend.
MEGA South Africa Logo
The logo for MEGA South Africa was designed by local geocacher DrDM & Raider from the Kwazulu-Natal province. After getting ideas from local geocaching teams, the design of a Lion's pawprint (spoor) took shape. The Lion symbolises strength and courage.
This Logo was chosen after a Poll was released to allow geocachers the opportunity to vote for their favourite logo.
This Logo will be the "brand" for MEGA South Africa!
We look forward to welcoming you to MEGA South Africa 2012!
