Geocache Description:

This cache uses CBS's Star Trek Series as it's theme. This puzzle cache is not at the posted location. You will not only need to solve a puzzle but also become familiar with several aspects of The United Federation of Planets.

"Welcome to The United Federation of Planets."

The United Federation of Planets is an interstellar federal republic, composed of planetary governments that agree to exist semi-autonomously under a single central government based on the principles of universal liberty, rights, and equality, and to share their knowledge and resources in peaceful cooperation and space exploration. One of the most powerful interstellar states in known space, it encompasses 8,000 light years and over 150 member worlds. Unlike its imperial rivals, who derive power from a single species subjugating other races, the Federation's various member worlds join willingly and are equals in the Federation's democratic society. The Federation Starfleet is incorporated as the peace-keeping and humanitarian armada of the Federation, in addition to maintaining exploratory, scientific, diplomatic, and defense functions.

The four founding species of the Federation: Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites The Federation was founded in San Francisco, Earth in 2161. The seeds of the Federation were planted during a temporary alliance in 2154, in the search for a Romulan drone-ship. After the crisis, these four species remained together, founding the precursor to the Federation, called the Coalition of Planets, a year later. Other species soon joined: the Denobulans, the Rigelians, the Coridanites, and several others. Over the next several years, the ties between the members of the Coalition strengthened and became more structured, until, finally, in 2161, the Coalition became the Federation.

Although the Federation's intentions are peaceful, around it are other, more belligerent powers such as the Klingon and Romulan Empires. As it expands through the admittance of more and more worlds, it comes into conflict with these powers.

At the start of the 24th century, the Federation began an unprecedented period of peaceful exploration of the galaxy, free of major conflicts.

The period of peaceful exploration came to an abrupt end. In 2365, the Federation encountered its single worst threat in the cybernetic race known as the Borg, one of the most powerful and destructive forces in the entire galaxy. They were unlike anything the Federation had ever encountered. The Federation was thus schooled in the fact that, in the vast, unexplored reaches of the galaxy beyond what they knew, there were threats that they could not even imagine.

The Federation is located in the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy. By the early 2370s, the Federation's territory is spread across 8,000 light years, with a membership of over 150 worlds and over 1,000 semi-autonomous colonies. Its major neighboring sovereignties are the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union, and the Ferengi Alliance. Other neighboring sovereignties are the Tzenkethi, the Tholian Assembly, the Breen Confederacy and the Xindi.

The Federation's government is a representative republic, headquartered on Earth. The Federation places great value on maintaining local sovereignty over local affairs. Member worlds are left to manage their own governance in accordance with their own traditions and local laws, so long as the general requirements of membership are met.

The executive branch is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Federation. The democratically-elected Federation President was the head of this branch. The Federation President serves as both the head of state and head of government; as chief executive officer of the government, the President determines most of the Federation's foreign policy, manages budgetary concerns, and serves as supreme commander of the Federation's military forces. The President's office is located in the Earth city of Paris on the European continent.

The Federation Council is the unicameral legislative body of the Federation. Composed of representatives from the various member worlds, the Federation Council holds the power to create, amend, and ratify Federation law. The Federation Council also holds a great deal of influence over the operations of the Federation's military service, Starfleet. It sometimes serves as the judging body of specially-convened courts-martial, and on occasion issues operational orders to Starfleet. The Council's meeting chamber is in the Earth city of San Francisco, on the west coast of the North American continent.

The judiciary is the branch of government responsible for resolving legal disputes. It consists of a hierarchy of courts, with the Federation Supreme Court at its apex alongside the civilian courts, Starfleet had its own system of courts martial.

The fundamental political principles and laws of the Federation are derived from important documents: The Federation Charter - ratified by the original members of the United Federation of Planets at the organization's founding in 2161; The Federation Constitution - enumerated rights to which all sentient beings were regarded as being entitled, collectively referred to as the Guarantees; The Federation Judicial Code -provides guidelines and regulations related to legal issues in the Federation; Starfleet General Orders and Regulations - a series of guidelines used to instruct members of Starfleet on the proper etiquette and policy in a situation that requires consultation for a resolution; The Federation Uniform Code of Justice - the legal basis of Starfleet court martial proceedings.

Starfleet is the deep-space exploratory and defensive service maintained by the United Federation of Planets. Its principal functions are the advancement of Federation knowledge about the galaxy, the advancement of Federation knowledge of science and technology, and the defense of the Federation. In addition, it also plays a significant diplomatic role. As per its mandate of deep-space exploration, its personnel are frequently brought into contact with cultures and sentient species whose existences are previously unknown to the Federation. Federation Starfleet officers therefore act as official representatives of the Federation in these cases. Also, Federation Starfleet vessels are frequently used to ferry ambassadors on diplomatic missions.

The basic unit of currency backed by the Federation is called the Federation credit. This currency is used in both internal and external transactions. Federation worlds who possess resources unavailable elsewhere are obligated to provide consignments of these resources in times of emergency. Individual Federation worlds are free to employ their own economic models.

Admittance into the Federation is either by invitation or successful petition of a world or civilization desirous of joining. In the second case, membership was granted only upon satisfaction of certain requirements. Firstly, the government of the prospective member submits an official petition to the Federation Council, outlining its desire to join.

Even before the investigation, the prospective member has to have an "advanced level of technology." The Federation's baseline definition of this term was the capability for faster-than-light space travel, achieved stable planetary political unity, respecting the rights of the individual and no form of caste discrimination is to be practiced.

Starfleet Entrance Exam

Question G. Quantum Slipstream Drive

The quantum slipstream is an extremely powerful means of propulsion that can transport a vessel at speeds in the upper warp 9.9 range. The velocities involved are so great that, in theory, the slipstream could carry a ship across the galaxy in a single day. Slip stream drive is comparable to transwarp technology. The quantum slipstream is actually a narrowly focused, directed warp field that is initiated by manipulating the fabric of the space-time continuum at the quantum level. It works by focusing a quantum field through a deflector dish to generate massive changes in local space curvature; this creates a subspace tunnel, which is projected in front of the vessel. Once a ship has entered this tunnel, the forces inside propel it at incredible speed.
4-It was developed by an alien race of unknown origin recently assimilated by the Borg.
5-The slipstream is large enough to accommodate more than one vessel.
6-In order to initiate a controlled shutdown of a quantum drive, the field strength has to be reduced to 25 percent.
7-Slipstream is impractical because it places considerable strain on the ship's hull and structural integrity systems.
8-The greatest difficulties involved lie not in generating the slipstream, but in maintaining and navigating it.
9-The Quantum Slipstream Drive Technology can be used in a number of separate subspace domains. The higher domains provide faster travel, however, it also requires more power to enter and exit.
Choose the answer that is incorrect.

Question H. Computer Systems

Probably the single most important operational element of a starship is it's main computer system, being responsible in some way for most every aspect of the ship's operation. The heart of the system is a set of three main processing cores. The computer cores are redundant, so any one can handle the computing load of the entire ship should the need arise. An intricate optical data network (ODN) connects the cores with virtually every component on board the ship, and a subspace link is maintained with hand-held or remote devices needing computer access.

Computer cores on all Federation starships incorporate a series of miniature subspace field generators to allow the processing of optical data at rates faster than the speed of light.

A true answer = 2 and a false answer = 9

Question I. Engineering Warp Core Ejection

Federation Star ships warp engines function by annihilating matter and antimatter, generating an enormous amount of energy. If the warp containment field collapses or the warp core becomes unstable, it can result in a massive explosion that could easily destroy the ship. As a result all Federation Star ships have been designed so that the warp core can be safely ejected and disposed of in case of an emergency. Please place in order, the steps necessary in warp core ejection.
Stage V The computer automatically opens the matter-antimatter hull hatch on the exterior of the ship. When all the interior connections have been severed, the core is dumped through this opening using explosive charges.
Stage W: A manual sequence initiation or automatic computer activation by an authorized crew member. If the warp core is dangerously close to breaching, the crew must will attempt to stabilize it, by cutting power relays and decoupling the dilithium matrix. If unable to be stabilized, Main Engineering is immediately evacuated with the safety bulkheads closing off the section.
Stage X: Once disconnected, the core may cool down and not breach. If this is the case, the vessel will return and attempt to retrieve and reinstall it. However, if the core does breach some Starships are equipped with secondary components to build a temporary warp core in order to reach a Federation starbase.
Take the letter of the first step and place it in the coordinates below.

Question J. Starship Bearings

Bearing is the term used to describe the navigation and directional trajectory of a course plotted for Starship movements. Flight vectors are specified as an azimuth/elevation relative to the current orientation of the space vehicle. The bearings in column 1 are mismatched in column 2, correctly match the bearings with the image.

Sum the number above the image Bearing 019, Mark 038, Bearing 258, Mark 010 and Bearing 087, Mark 030 and enter in the oordinates.

Question K. Impulse Engines

Impulse engines are the main form of propulsion at sub light speeds aboard a Starship; The engine is a basic fusion system with vectored exhaust, not unlike a solid propellant rocket. The impulse engine is made up of four main parts. The impulse reaction chamber, a six meter diameter sphere, where deuterium shush is feed in and a fusion reaction takes place. During space flight mode the plasma is accelerated by the second stage and passed onto the third stage, the driver coil. The driver coil lowers the mass of the ship to allow the ship to pass more easily through space and time. The final stage of the impulse engine is the vectored exhaust director. This stage directs the flow of the impulse engine exhaust to allow free movement of the ship on any axis.
T/F-Traveling at high impulse speed, greater then .25c, does not cause time dilation on the ship.
T/F-Impulse engines are used for travel within a solar system or areas of space where warp drive can not function.

T/F-The standard speed for impulse power is .25c, on larger ships such as Galaxy class ships the secondary engines on the saucer section can be combined with the main engines to produce speeds up to .75c
T/F-The engines are not able to drive the ship and provide power simultaneously.
Please count the number of true statements and place in the coordinates below.

Question L. Planet Classifications

Starfleet employs a planetary classification system. This is not a true planetary classification system but rather a planetary atmosphere classification system. Several classes are suitable for unprotected breathing or nearly so. Correctly identify the Planetary classification with the correct Class letter.

Planet Classifications:

Planet Classification Planet Description
Class J
2
Adaptable Planets of this class are usually found in a star's "habitable zone". They are adaptable for humanoid colonization through the use of pressure domes and other life support devices. They are typically 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers in diameter. They have thin atmospheres. Small amounts of water are present.
Class K
4
Geo-Morteus Planets, found in a star's "hot zone". They are typically 1,000 to 10,000 kilometers in diameter. They have high surface temperatures due to the proximity to the star. Their atmospheres are extremely tenuous with few chemically active gases.
Class L
1
Terrestrial Planets of this class are found in a star's "habitable zone". They are typically 10,000 to 15 thousand kilometers in diameter. They have atmospheres that contain oxygen and nitrogen . Water and life-forms are typically abundant.
Class M
3
Pelagic planets are usually found in a star's "habitable zone". They are typically 10,000 to 15 thousand kilometers in diameter. They have atmospheres that contain oxygen and nitrogen . Water and life-forms are typically abundant.
Class N
5
Geo-Inactive Planets of this class are usually found in a star's "habitable zone" or "cold zone". They are typically 1,000 to 10,000 kilometers in diameter. Low solar radiation and minimal internal heat usually result in a frozen atmosphere.

Take the number above the image of the Class M planet and enter in the coordinates.

Question N. Warp Propulsion

Zefram Cochrane became one of Earth's history's most renowned propulsion scientist when he revolutionized space travel in 2063 with his invention of the warp drive, making faster-than-light travel possible. A starship's Warp Propulsion System (WPS) consists of three major assemblies.

First, the matter/anti-matter reaction assembly (M/ARA) generates power from a controlled annihilation of matter and antimatter.
Second, the power transfer conduits carry the energy plasma from the reaction chamber to the warp engine nacelles; at this point, power to run the bulk of the ship's non-propulsive systems is accessed by electro plasma system (EPS) taps.
Third the plasma is directed to the warp engine nacelles. Each nacelle contains a number of warp field coils; when energized, the coils cause an energy shift that actually changes the geometry of space around the Starship. When the coils are fired sequentially, they create warp field layers that press upon each other and cumulatively reduce the apparent mass of the vehicle, allowing the ship to move faster than the speed of light.

If the matter and antimatter tanks on a Galaxy-class starship are nine-tenths depleted, calculate the intermix ratio necessary to reach a starbase one hundred light years away at warp factor 8.
Sum both numbers in the ratio in the answer and enter in the coordinates.

Question O. Thrusters - RCS

Acronym for Reaction Control System (RCS) also referred to as maneuvering thrusters. The RCS is a low-power propulsion system for low-velocity attitude and translational control. Depending on the Starship type, the system consists of a number of thrusters mostly located at the edge of the saucer hull.
Of course there is nothing necessarily advanced about a reaction control system. Its principle hasn't changed in essence from the Apollo spacecraft to the 24th century.
T/F-RCS is based on a fusion reaction.
A true answer = 2 and a false answer = 1

Question P. Phaser Weapons

Acronym for PHASed Energy Ratification, a directed-energy weapon used by Starfleet Federation and others. Phasers were used as side arms by all Starfleet personnel. Most weapons are either Phaser Type-1,Type-2 and Type-3. Correctly identify the phaser type with the correct image. Sum the number above the image of the Type 1 and Type 3 phasers and enter in the coordinates.
