Il 4 settembre 1260 a Monteaperti fu combattuta una delle battaglie più gloriose per la storia medievale di Siena. Qui il potente esercito dell’allenza guelfa al comando dei fiorentini subiì una pesante sconfitta ad opera dell’allenza ghibellina senese.
Tale scontro è stato poi ripreso e reso ancor più celebre dalle parole di Dante Alighieri che, nella sua Divina Commedia menziona: «lo strazio ed il grande scempio che fece l'Arbia colorata in rosso.
Sulla sommità di un colle di fronte al campo di battaglia sorge, adormata da cipressi secolari, una piramide commemorativa, già presente in epoca romanica.

On September 4, 1260 at Monteaperti battles was fought one of the most glorious in the history of medieval Siena. Here the powerful army under the command of the Florentine Guelphs of relaxing I suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of relaxing Ghibelline Siena.
The clash was then taken up and made even more famous by the words of Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy refers to "the agony and the great carnage that colored the Arbia red.
On top of a hill overlooking the battlefield lies, adorned with cypress trees, a pyramid memorial, already present in the Romanesque period.
